Piezoelectric Film is an enabling transducer technology with unique capabilities. Piezo Film produces voltage in proportional to compressive or tensile mechanical stress or strain, making it an ideal dynamic strain gage. It makes a highly reliable, low-cost vibration sensor, accelerometer or dynamic switch element. Piezo Film is also ideally suited for high fidelity transducers operating throughout the high audio (>1kHz) and ultrasonic (up to 100MHz) ranges.
Piezo Film Elements
Piezo Film elements are offered in four variations:
- Silver ink screen printed electrodes
- Lamination for higher voltage output when bending
- Flexible leads
- Shielded sensors
Applications include:
- Dynamic strain gauges
- Vibration sensors for alarms, switches, speakers, and contact microphones
Piezo film design kits are a good starting point to learn more about Piezo film sensors and their applications.

VibraBoss 100 Vibration Monitor
A robust, versatile vibration sensor for continuous monitoring of rotating equipment such as large motors, fans, conveyors, etc. Simple to install and monitor; 2-wire hookup, 10-30VDC supply, signal powered, 4-20mA analog output proportional to average vibration velocity, or optionally, displacement. Designed for monitoring equipment with rotational speeds between 200 and 2000 RPM. For rotor speeds less than 500 rpm, "displacement" is generally more significant; at speeds about 2000 RPM, "acceleration" is the parameter of choice.
A unique and important feature of the VibraBoss 100 is that it responds to "jerk" - technically the third derivative of displacement with respect to time (y''') - rather than acceleration (y''). This makes it uniquely insensitive to the earth's gravitational field, thus simplifying installation by avoiding precise alignment usually needed for other acceleration (y'') based transducers. The electronics contained in the VibraBoss*100 integrates the jerk (y''') signal and generates the desired velocity (y' ) or displacement (y) output as a 4-20mA signal. The 4-20mA signal can be monitored externally with any computer monitoring system, chart recorder, or by an optional stand alone threshold detector. Typically, an increase in the vibration signal to 0.25 in/sec can trigger a maintenance alarm, while a level of 0.5 in/sec can initiate automatic shutdown.
For security, install one sensor horizontally at each bearing. A control box with power supply, set-point relays, meter, warning strobe and alarm horn for monitoring one or more points can be supplied.

Description: Piezo film’s capabilities to generate a high voltage output under bending strain, combined with its rugged form factor, make it an ideal candidate for solid state impact switches. Rather than using a switch contact closure, the piezo film generates a pulse which is detected by electronics. Although many of the DT’s, LDT’s and FLDT’s supplied by Measurement Specialties are used for switch applications, it is sometimes convenient to have a switch with integrated electronics. The SW100 is an ideal configuration for impact detection and momentary switch applications. A direct contact force on the tip of the stainless steel cantilever beam of the SW100 induces strain on the laminated Piezo Film Sensor (PFS) element. With dynamic strain, the PFS element generates an output that activates a built-in, normally-open circuit. Once activated, the circuit resembles the closure of a contact switch, but without the inherent discontinuity that contact points exhibit because of corrosion, pitting and bouncing. Thus the SW100 provides a single digital pulse that is ideal for triggering digital circuits and signal processing. The imperviousness, elasticity and reliability of the PFS element, along with the noise rejection characteristics of the circuit, combine to provide the SW100 with features that suit applications demanding consistent, reliable performance throughout tens of millions of switching cycles. Custom options are available to fit specific customer applications. For more information on the SW100, please call one of our applications engineers.
