A pneumatic wrench uses compressed air to power mechanical tightening and loosening operations.
These devices are used in industry to tighten bolts and screws, in the automobile industry and in all types of mechanical assembly. They are not used to free stuck nuts.
Pneumatic wrenches are reversible, switching easily from forward to reverse. The air arrives at six or seven bars through a bayonet fitting of 6.3 millimeters (1/4"), 10 mm (3/8") or 12.5 mm (1/2"). Excess air is vented through the side or the handle. Sockets, screwdrivers and any necessary extensions are attached to a drive of 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1" or 1 1/2".
The ratchet-type wrench is less powerful, but its smaller size allows use in tight quarters. The pistol-grip impact wrench can deliver up to 3000 Newton meters (Nm) of torque at up to 8000 rpm. It uses a striking mechanism with a rotating hammer, twin prongs, a pin or single or double hammers. Both impact and certain ratchet versions are torque wrenches whose torque and speed are adjustable.
The principal criteria are the size of the drive and the bayonet fitting. Choice also depends on air pressure and flow, rotational speed, maximum torque and the amount of noise generated by the tool.
