Benefits of using a soft starter:
Soft starters are a simple and economic method of controlling AC motors for fixed speed applications. Traditional methods of starting motors such as direct-on-line (DOL) or star-delta result in increased machine wear through rapid acceleration and very high peak currents. Soft starters solve this problem through controlling the acceleration and deceleration phases of operation.
Control Techniques' Digistart family offers two levels of functionality to meet all your soft starter requirements.
Digistart CS:
Digistart CS is a compact soft starter for motors up to 110kW (200A). The Digistart CS offers comprehensive motor protection features and is quickly commissioned using simple rotary switches.
Digistart IS:
Digistart IS is an intelligent soft starter offering many advanced features for motors up to 800kW (1600A). These features include 'Adaptive control' which provides an unprecedented level of acceleration and deceleration control, and an intuitive plain language display for configuration.

PETER electronic is developing the VersiStart II series, a new powerful generation of soft starters offering proven quality and dependability in a slim and compact design. Because of its narrow design, the microcontroller-equipped soft starter is extremely space- and cost-saving.
The VersiStart II series can be individually programmed and thus easily adapted to customer-specific requirements. The soft starters are especially suitable for controlled acceleration and deceleration of electric motors and allow, inter alia, jerkless torque increase and current reduc-tion during the starting phase. With this new development, PETER electronic offers a low-priced alternative to star-delta starters and an intelligent solution with a high degree of functionality at low investment cost.

Digistart is a multifunctional electronic starter with microcontroller. It is suitable for use on all the three-phase asynchronous induction motors, and assures :
- Starting management: All the traditional systems concerning motor starting (direct, star-delta, etc.) can draw a starting current that can vary between 7 and 9 times the motor rated current.
Digistart, can limit by simple adjustment, ina precise way, the current during the entire starting up phase.
- Protection of motor and driven machine: The starting up, the protection and the system automation imply the numerous elements installation making the electronic cabinets complex and costly. Digistart provides supplementary functions that limits the need for additional equipment with a consequent reduction in cost of material, manpower and running costs.
- Progressive stop control: The impact of harsh stops on certain low inertia applications, especially pumps, induces mechanical shocks, hydraulic disturbance or noise pollution.
Digistart, by generating a voltage at the motor terminals during the deceleration phase, extends the time taken for the motor to come to rest.

Application
The softstarter is an electronic starter for AC-motors of the squirrel cage winding with slip-ring rotor constructional type. The function of a softstarter is to allow AC-motors to accelerate smoothly up to nominal speed, whereby the ohmic resistance has been replaced by a low-loss, bi-directional power control semiconductor. The motor ist connected up so that the electronic resistor is in series with one of the three supply wires.
Functional principle
When the motor starts up, the softstarter automaticly switches the series
resistor to a preselectable maximum value. In this way, one of the stator windings will receive a reduced voltage and therefor a reduced current while the other two receive the full voltage supply.
Through this manipulation, the otherwise constant and perfectly circular torque chracteristics are changed to an ellipse. The motor will run up slowly from stationary up to its nominal speed. While the motor is accelerating, the electronic series resistance is continuosly reduced in value, and when the nominal speed has been reached, the resistance is interally short-circuited using a relay. In this way, it is possible to leave the softstarter permanently in the main circuit with no additional power loss.
The values for starting torque and time to reach nominal speed can be
set on the stepless 10-gang potentiometer.

These soft starters are microprocessor controlled and are designed to work with asynchronous motors connected in open delta configuration. By using this technique the soft starter can handle more power than when connected in a conventional star circuit. Motors of up to 55kW open delta (37kW star)can be controlled with this range of units.
The M300 range limits the current during start-up and so it is more efficient. All settings are made through a touch panel which incorporates an LED display.
They protect the mains supply from sags and damaging surges (transients), whilst reducing the current demand during start-up.

Soft starter DS6
"In Line" starter in a compact design up to 110 kW
DS6 the smallest soft starter world-wide in the 75 – 110 kW class.
Provided in just two sizes the DS6 enables a two-phase controlled motor start for assigned motor ratings from 18.5 kW to 110 kW (at 400 V). During uninterrupted operation the thyristors are bypassed via internal bypass contacts.
Simple and easy handling comparable with the devices of the DS4 series. Using three setting options: USTART (start voltage in %), tSTART (start-up time) and tSTOP (delay time) in seconds (s) the start conditions can be adapted to suit the respective application.
Two light-emitting diodes (LEDs) provide operational status indications and error diagnostics; two potential-free relay contacts (ready for operation, top-of-ramp) can be used to control external components.
The dimensions and connection terminals correspond to the proven Moeller standards for the circuit-breakers NZM1 (up to 55 kW) and NZM2 (up to 110 kW).

The ASTAT XT soft starter delivers reliable performance and smooth acceleration for a range of standard AC motors, from 8A-1400A and from 230V-690V. By controlling motor acceleration and deceleration, it reduces mechanical wear and tear on motors better than across-the-line starting methods. This is particularly true in such applications as pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors.
A simple interface for fast set-up and operation
Its backlit LCD screen, which delivers full descriptions of parameters, makes the ASTAT XT easy to use. In two rows of 16 characters each, it displays the function selected and the value of the setting and/or monitor. Selecting and changing parameters is simply done with the arrow keys. Via any one of four selectable user languages (English, German, Italian, Spanish), it delivers:
• Data Readouts – e.g. Line Voltage, Motor Current, etc.
• Fault Diagnostics – e.g. Overload, Overvoltage, Undercurrent
• Statistical Data – e.g. Elapsed Run Time, Fault Recording, Trip Event, etc.
• Parameter Settings – e.g. Acceleration Time, Starting Voltage, Motor FLA
