A stepper motor turns in response to electric impulses received by its windings. These are converted to angular motion, whose movement between impulses is called a step. Each impulse sent by the command module turns the motor one step. Each complete rotation can be divided into anywhere from four to 400 steps.
These motors are common in open-loop systems, where speed or position control is essential. For example, they are found in inkjet and laser printers to position the printer heads and advance the paper.
The three types of stepper motor are permanent magnet, variable reluctance and hybrid.
