A switching regulator is one component of a voltage regulator supply circuit. It offers better efficiency than linear regulation, and the output voltage can be higher than or the inverse of the input voltage.
ApplicationsThese devices are used in electronics for powering circuits or recharging batteries.
TechnologiesThe voltage source is chopped by a transistor operating in a switching mode, piloted by a PWM signal. It can be integrated into the regulator. Excess voltage is transferred to an inductive component (diode or transformer) that acts as an energy reservoir. The output voltage value depends on the PWM duty cycle. It is stabilized by diodes and capacitors. Operation at high frequency allows component size to be reduced.
The location of the rectifier diode determines the input/output voltage relationship. Buck (step-down) assemblies lower voltage, boost (step-up) units it and buck-boost configurations deliver inverted voltage either lower or higher than the input.
A buck-boost flyback converter uses a transformer, the most common arrangement. Forward assemblies derive from the buck assembly and are well-adapted to applications requiring a powerful output current, as are push-pull models.
Switching regulators are chosen on the basis of their possible assembly types, input to be regulated, desired output voltage and protection against short circuits, overload and overheating.
