A capacitor is a device able to store electrical energy. It can be polarized or unpolarized.
ApplicationsThese devices are used to stabilize voltage in electric power lines. They also are found in filters and act as phase shifters in signal processing. Super capacitors are used in industry to store large amounts of energy, while other models are used in lighting.
TechnologiesA capacitor consists of two conductive surfaces separated by a dielectric, an insulating material. Capacitance is measured in farads. Tantalum or polarized electrolytic models are used for storage, but they do not perform well in signal processing. They have high, non-linear series resistance. Synthetic plastic film capacitors are non-polarized; they are used in signal decoupling and in filters. Other types include, ceramic, mica and paper capacitors. Large industrial versions serve to store energy, to correct machinery power factors and to start motors.
