A tri-color LED is an electroluminescent diode capable of emitting light at three different wavelengths, for example, red, green and blue (RGB).
ApplicationsTri-color LEDs are used primarily in indicator lamps capable of signaling three distinct states or conditions. They are also used as RGB single-color LEDs.
TechnologiesColor change in a tri-color LED resembles that of a bi-color unit. Generally, there are three leads and two junctions. If both red and green junctions are activated simultaneously, orange light is produced. The single-color RGB LED constitutes a special category, combining three LEDs in one. Variable mixing of these three colors can be used to produce any visible color desired.
How to chooseThe tri-color LED is chosen to save space and streamline configuration in an electronic assemblage. It is also common where three distinct conditions must be signaled.
