Carmen® OCR Railcode – Automatic Railway Vehicle Code Recognition
Carmen® OCR Railcode is a specialized software library that recognizes standardized identification numbers printed on railway wagons and coaches. Designed for railway and freight management systems, it automates rolling stock identification using still images captured from wayside or overhead cameras.
The engine extracts the full rail vehicle number, along with per-character confidence values and code position data. It supports the UIC (International Union of Railways) format and is compatible with Windows and Linux, running on x86 and ARM architectures. Developers can integrate the SDK easily using C/C++, Java, C#, or Visual Basic .NET.
Key benefits:
- Detects and decodes UIC-compliant wagon and coach numbers
- Processes still images (BMP, PNG, JPEG, RAW)
- Outputs ASCII code, position, and confidence per character
- Compatible with hardware triggers for live monitoring setups
- Runs on Windows 64-bit and Linux 32/64-bit (x86 & ARM)
- Seamless integration with demo apps, SDK libraries, and sample code
- Optional Neural Network Controller (NNC) for higher performance
- Four engine updates per year to ensure precision and reliability
Whether used in border control, railway logistics, or depot automation, Carmen® OCR Railcode helps reduce delays, eliminate manual entry errors, and deliver real-time rail asset visibility at scale.
