Brushless DC motors combine the construction of AC motors with the performance of DC Brush motors. They feature rare earth magnets and hall sensors for commutation instead of brushes. As such, they require a motion controller for commutation. These motors are commonly found in MedTech applications like high-speed centrifuges. They are also found in high-tech servo applications that involve closed-loop positioning, velocity control and rapid-fire starting and stopping such as certain packaging equipment that surrounds a product with kraft paper, bubble wrap or expanding foam. Encoders are frequently used in conjunction with brushless DC gearmotors to determine position, speed, and direction.
