Fail-Safe Barrier Drive: When a Power Failure Becomes a Safety Feature
Most automated systems are designed to operate as long as electrical power is available. But in safety-critical applications, the most important question is often: what happens when the power disappears?
For an underground parking barrier system, the requirement was clear. In the event of a fire, a short circuit could cause a complete power failure. A barrier remaining closed could prevent vehicles from exiting and complicate evacuation.
The solution was based on a fail-safe design principle. During normal operation, the motor controls and maintains the barrier position. However, when power is lost, the mechanism automatically switches to a safety position, allowing the barrier to open without electrical assistance.
This approach ensures that a simple power outage—even one caused by an emergency situation—cannot trap vehicles inside the parking facility.
