Single-Winding Motor for High-Speed Industrial Spin Dryers
For an industrial spin-drying application, a customer required a motor capable of delivering high starting torque while also providing very rapid braking at the end of each cycle.
The existing solution used a double-winding motor:
one three-phase winding for rotation;
a second DC-powered winding dedicated to braking.
Although effective, this design resulted in a large and bulky motor. The challenge was therefore to achieve the same performance with a more compact architecture.
Instead of duplicating the winding system, we developed a single-winding motor with a specially designed electrical connection. The same winding could perform two different functions depending on the operating mode:
in one configuration, it provided three-phase operation for starting and rotation;
in another configuration, it generated the magnetic field required for rapid and efficient braking.
By eliminating the second winding, we reduced the motor size, complexity and manufacturing cost while maintaining the required dynamic performance.
This project demonstrated that innovation does not always come from adding components—it can also come from finding new ways to use existing technology.
