Description

Silent Motor Design for Medical Dialysis Equipment A customer approached us with a demanding requirement: develop an extremely quiet motor for a renal dialysis machine. In medical environments, noise is not only a matter of comfort. Patients can remain connected to dialysis equipment for several hours, making acoustic performance a key design parameter. Instead of reducing noise through traditional methods, we looked for a way to eliminate one of the main sources of sound: the cooling fan. Since dialysis systems already use a controlled water circuit, we explored the possibility of using this available water for motor cooling. Similar to the difference between air-cooled and water-cooled vehicles, water cooling provides a more stable thermal environment while removing fan noise caused by airflow, turbulence and vibration. This solution required a dedicated stainless-steel motor housing with integrated cooling channels, fully compatible with the medical environment. By combining water cooling, fan elimination and a corrosion-resistant stainless-steel design, we achieved a highly reliable and exceptionally quiet motor, operating below 50 dB. The result demonstrated that the best way to reduce noise is sometimes not to control the source—but to remove it completely.
