Compact Torque Motor for a 12-Meter Highway Barrier
A customer required a torque motor capable of delivering high starting torque while naturally limiting current under stall conditions, preventing the overheating typically associated with conventional induction motors.
After developing and validating the motor, a new challenge emerged. Once coupled to the gearbox, the complete drive assembly became too long to fit inside the housing of a highway barrier.
Instead of redesigning the entire system, we developed an integrated solution by designing a custom motor with a dual-purpose flange that directly incorporated the gearbox interface. We also engineered a dedicated gearbox optimized for the available space, ensuring precise alignment, efficient heat dissipation and high mechanical reliability.
The compact design successfully met the installation constraints and led to an even more ambitious project: the complete drive system for a 12-meter highway barrier.
Through careful optimization of the mechanical geometry, transmission ratio and lever arms, we achieved an exceptional result: lifting a 68 kg barrier arm with a motor rated at only 0.5 kW. At the time, comparable systems often relied on motors of around 5 kW.
The achievement was not based on higher motor power, but on optimizing the entire electromechanical system to deliver maximum useful torque with minimum energy consumption.
