ApplicationThis instrument is designed for testing the through-dry (surface-dry) state of paints, lacquers and similar coatings in accordance with ISO 9117 and EN 29117.
Principle of testA test plunger covered with a monofil nylon fabric and loaded with a defined weight is lowered onto the test surface for a limited period and then turned through 90°. The effect on the coating is evaluated after lifting the plunger to determine surface dryness.
Design and functionThe tester consists of a specimen table with a support stand guiding a loaded weight vertically. The test plunger is connected to the weight via a ball-and-socket joint (total test head weight 1500 g). A rubber sheet (hardness 50 IRHD according to ISO 48) is fixed to the front of the test head. A monofil nylon fabric (thread diameter 0.12 mm, 100 x 100 mm) is attached and retained by an O-ring; it must be replaced before each test. The instrument must be levelled horizontally before use using the supplied box level and adjustable feet.
Test procedureAfter a defined drying time lower the test head onto the specimen. Press for 10 s, rotate the test head 90° and after a further 2 s lift the head. If no marks or damage are observed on the coating, the through-dry state is achieved; otherwise repeat the test after an appropriate interval (see standards).
