The Drying Time Recorder Model 504-V is an electric instrument that automatically determines and records the drying behaviour of paints and similar coatings, enabling parallel testing of multiple coatings with variable testing speeds and configurable running times.

Technical description
The instrument consists of a metal body with a cover plate that serves as a platform for glass strips (305 x 25 mm) onto which the coatings are applied. The testing needles are fixed in a steel carrier device. The recorder offers variable testing speeds and a choice of 20 pre-programmed running times from 7.5 minutes to 96 hours; other running times (in 30 s increments) are available on request. The set time is shown on an illuminated display. To determine transitional drying points the carrier device is moved back by hand and the needles placed on the appropriate point so the relevant time can be read off the time scale.

Purpose and application
The Drying Time Recorder, Model 504-V, automatically determines and registers the drying behaviour of paints and similar coatings, allowing comparative and parallel testing for quality control and R&D in coatings laboratories and production control.

Test principle
A needle slides over the coating film at a defined speed. The track produced by the needle varies according to the degree of dryness. The various drying stages are defined by evaluating the time and track characteristics of the film under investigation.
