JUNKER offers long-term investment security with the new Platform 3 development. Platform 3 advances JUNKER's grinding technologies to address market demands for precision, flexibility and cost-effectiveness across single-part production, small batches and series manufacturing.

The Intention
Platform 3 is a modular series conceived for current market requirements: small lot sizes and growing part variety. The platform balances flexibility and performance, enabling economical production from one-off R&D parts to large series for Tier 1–3 suppliers.

The Development
Development goals focused on flexibility and cost-efficiency through a standardized, modular system. All models use a common machine bed with extension options via configurable table assemblies and grinding spindle heads. Configurations range from standard to fully customer-specific solutions to optimize throughput, flexibility and total cost of ownership.

The grinding processes
Platform 3 supports a broad spectrum of grinding processes: cylindrical and non-cylindrical OD and ID grinding, plunge and angular grinding, profile, face, surface and groove grinding, plus the JUNKER QUICKPOINT process.

The machines
The design enables flexible machine configurations for project-specific solutions with an attractive price-performance ratio. Different guide systems and drive options for the main axes (X and Y) match accuracy requirements. The automation concept supports manual loading, external robots or internal gantry systems for rapid adaptation to new part variants. Easy access and optimized setup capability simplify maintenance and changeovers.

Equipment and Options
  • MACHINE BED: Machine bed in mineral casting for excellent damping, torsional rigidity and thermal stability. Coolant back circulation keeps the bed clean.
  • TABLE ASSEMBLIES: Table units mount on linear guides via standardized interfaces; adjustable manually or fully automatic for reconfiguration.
  • MAIN AXES: Compact cross-slide layout with axes under the wheel head. Guideways use modular high-precision circulating roller units. Drive options: ball screws or linear motors.
  • WORKPIECE SPINDLE AND TAILSTOCK: High-precision spindles with a patented 3-point clamping interface. JUNICOR workhead belt-driven and prepared for ISO accessory interfaces. Tailstock supports stationary or live centers; adjustable manual, hydraulic or NC.
  • GRINDING WHEEL HEAD: Up to three spindle variants. Belt-driven or high-frequency spindles for CBN high-speed grinding (up to 125 m/s) or conventional aluminum oxide grinding (up to 63 m/s). Automatic B-axis swivel with positioning accuracy < 1 angular second.
  • IN-PROCESS MEASURING SYSTEM: Digital measuring head records in-process dimensions; values stored and corrections calculated. Absolute measuring system reduces setup time between part types.
  • LONGITUDINAL AND RADIAL POSITIONING: Axial position probe measures part position after clamping; values integrated into the control.
  • DRESSING: Supports fixed and rotary dressing tools on workhead, tailstock or table. For high-speed grinding the workhead C-axis can act as dressing spindle.
  • PERIPHERY: Integrated hydraulic, cooling and air-filtration units positioned to reduce layout. Standardized systems available for application-specific coolant pressure and rinsing pumps.
  • LOADING SYSTEM: Supports manual loading, industrial robots, external or internal gantry systems. Internal gantry adapts to new part configurations with little effort.
  • FILTRATION SYSTEM: Filtration covers oil and emulsion mist as well as dust and chip extraction for particle sizes from 0.001 to 100 μm.
