Overview
The Magnatech D-Head 420 welding head is engineered for multi-pass orbital GTAW pipe-to-pipe and pipe-to-fitting welds. It reproduces skilled manual welding motions and flexibility while improving repeatability and reducing rework. Its compact envelope supports applications with radial and axial clearance constraints; many applications require a minimum clearance of 2" / 51 mm. Positioning on the pipe is achieved via interchangeable guide rings (24 standard sizes) and insert kits to cover 0.84 – 14" / 21.34 – 355.60 mm OD.

• Torch oscillation (weaving): Independently programmable width, speed and endpoint dwell; electronic cross-seam steering via pendant; pulsed current automatically synchronized with oscillation for controlled bead profile.
• Filler wire spool: Accepts standard 1 kg / 2 lb spools or 0.5 kg / 1 lb low-profile spools to reduce radial footprint in tight clearances.
• Head‑mounted wire feeder: Compact feeder on the head supports multiple wire diameters for process flexibility.
• Welding head mounting and rotation: Hinged heavy‑duty metal guide rings lock the head to the pipe; rugged sprocket drive provides steady rotation for consistent weld travel.
• Use on preheated pipes: Heat‑tolerant components and water‑cooled housing suit high‑temperature applications and alloys requiring preheat.
• Arc gap control (AGC): Real‑time control of electrode‑to‑work distance to maintain consistent arc conditions and weld quality.

Notes
Guide rings are composed of two hinged segments that close around the pipe and latch together. Insert kits allow use on smaller diameters than the ring nominal size. For pipe/tube OD below 1.75" / 44.45 mm, radial clearance requirements increase as diameter decreases.
