Track geometry is one of crucial track condition parameters, closely related to many other degradation phenomena, and as it is often used for triggering the whole range of track M&R activities. The permanent way is subject to innumerable elements and activities that have a detrimental effect on its condition and potentially on the safety of passengers and freight. Proper care and cure of the track can bring countless benefits. Automated optoelectronic systems can be used to accurately measure three-dimensional geometry of track layouts and associated measurements used in design, construction. Compact and lightweight no-contact measuring system allows an accurate evaluation of railroad track geometry in a variety of operational conditions. The system integrates a robust inertial measuring unit - incorporating high accuracy accelerometers and solid-state rate gyroscopes - with optical-gauge boxes and provides measurements of all critical track geometrical parameters from 0 km/h up to 400 km/h (250 mph). Modular and scalable architecture allows implementation of “all-in-one” full rail profile measurement as well as a completely unattended configuration. Chord-Based Multiple optical sub-systems can be mounted on a suitable vehicle to implement a chord-based track geometry measuring system. Using the latest non-contact optical technology, the Chord configuration works at speeds from 0 km/h up to 320 km/h (200 mph) allowing real-time acquisition, identification and notification of defects based on a wide range of user-configurable thresholds.
