OverviewWearcomp® sheet molding compound (SMC) composites are polyimide-based thermoset materials reinforced with chopped carbon fiber. They provide high shear strength, impact resistance and sustained performance at continuous operating temperatures up to 315°C (600°F). Designed as a metal replacement for demanding industrial and aerospace environments, Wearcomp® enables reduced lubrication needs, cleaner operation and lower maintenance downtime.
CompositionWearcomp® is formulated from high-temperature polyimide thermoset resin blended with 1 in chopped carbon fiber (≈25 mm). Available variants include:
- Wearcomp®: polyimide thermoset resin reinforced with carbon fibers — low coefficient of friction and high wear resistance
- Wearcomp® 200: same base formulation with added graphite for further friction reduction
- Other reinforcement options: glass or alternative carbon fiber formats depending on application requirements
ApplicationsSuitable for high-mechanical-demand applications and where metal replacement, weight savings or elimination of lubrication are required. Typical uses include:
- Aviation critical systems (engine components, flight controls, landing gear)
- Wheel and braking systems
- Bushings, guide rings, wear liners, seals, clamps and thermal isolators
Key benefits- High shear strength and impact resistance
- Durability at elevated temperatures
- Low coefficient of friction (improved in graphite-containing grades)
- Metal replacement enabling weight reduction and reduced lubrication
- Cleaner operation with decreased maintenance and downtime
