Emission Measurement using the Cover Method or Drilling MethodWith the REGULATION OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on the reduction of methane emissions in the energy sector and amending Regulation (EU) 2019/942 (EU Methane Emissions Regulation), the metrological detection of methane emissions during the technical operation of gas transmission and distribution networks becomes necessary.Drilling Method: The emission quantity measurement using the suction method serves to accurately detect methane emission rates at identified leak points in the pipeline network. The measurement values obtained from this emission measurement correspond to the measurement at the leak point in the soil and should not be compared with surface measurements. Up to six probes can be connected. In the MVS 304-EM, the flow rate is measured, and the concentration in the extracted gas flow is measured using the gas analyzer.Cover Method: The emission quantity measurement using the cover method serves to accurately detect methane emission rates at the surface. The measurement values obtained from this emission measurement do not correspond to those at the leak point in the soil. In the MVS 304-EM, the flow rate is measured, and the concentration in the extracted gas flow is measured using the gas analyzer. This method is characterized by its speed and simplicity in practical field applications. The measurement is completed within a short period. If the outflow quantity is desired directly at the leak point, it can be measured with the MVS 304-EM and a cover cloth after excavation.Emission Quantity Calculation: For the determination of the emission quantity and the creation of documentation for each measurement, a customer-specific internet portal is available.Emissions direct measurement: High-flow sampling (HFS) for pipe components and system-wide emissions measurements. HFS cloths are available in several sizes and can be attached to fittings, valves, vents, or GRDM systems in a gas-tight manner using all-round Velcro fasteners. The suction hose is connected via quick couplings, and different sizes ensure that both point sources (e.g., stuffing boxes, flanges, pressure gauges) and larger fittings are completely enclosed. The procedure corresponds to the HFS method established in the industry for the quantitative measurement of fugitive emissions. In high-flow sampling, the entire leak plume is extracted together with ambient air at a high volume flow. Complete sealing/taping as in bagging is not necessary. The total volume flow and methane concentration are recorded on the device side and used to calculate the emission quantity in g/h.Measurement procedure (practical guide):Attach the cloth as tension-free and draft-free as possible, secure the lacing.Connect the MVS304-EM to the quick couplingStart the measurement and wait for stabilization; typical individual measurements take a few minutes to ensure stable concentration and flow values.Take photos of the measurement setupUpload data to the portalApplications and notes from standards: The method is suitable for everything from flanges to GRDM systems and is anchored in European guidelines for methane quantification in gas transport networks, distribution networks, and storage/LNG (CEN/TS 17874:2022: Identification and quantification of emission-relevant sources, methodological steps). Within the framework of OGMP 2.0, HFS is recommended as a source/component-level measurement approach for higher-level reporting (Level 4/5). Current technical guidance documents and templates support uncertainty analysis and data management.Quality assurance/best practices: Ensure complete coverage, select enclosure size so that the entire leak is within the suction field, avoid leakage paths by checking complete suction at the edges.MVS 304-EMUp to six suction probes can be operated simultaneously on the mobile vacuum station, or alternatively, the cover can be connected for the cover method. The handling of the MVS 304-EM is simple and user-friendly. A two-stage filtration system retains water and dirt. The filter can be changed easily with just a few steps.Technical Data MVS 304-EM:Rated voltage: 230 V - 50 HzMotor power: 0.5 kWFlow rate: max. 14 m³/hVacuum: approx. 850 mbarWeight: approx. 33 kgDimensions: L x W x H, 32 x 47 x 65 cmFlow measurement: 0-250 l/minScope of Delivery:MVS 304-EMA cover mat approx. 1x2mInspection certificateOperating manualAccessories:209.793 Probe set209.791 Expansion suction probe set (max. 6 probes connectable)204.361 Adapter for devices with 20 mm connection coupling204.442 MVS302 telescopic mounting kit completeTechnical Specifications / Features:Emission measurement device for methane using cover or drilling methodUp to six probes connectableHigh-flow sampling (HFS) compatible230 V - 50 Hz, 0.5 kW motorMax. flow rate: 14 m³/hVacuum: approx. 850 mbarWeight: approx. 33 kgDimensions: 32 x 47 x 65 cmFlow measurement: 0-250 l/minTwo-stage filtration systemIncludes cover mat, inspection certificate, operating manual
