Description

The custom-designed homogenizing furnaces for aluminum billets and logs for most technological applications

Overview
Custom-designed homogenizing furnaces for aluminum billets and logs for industrial applications. Available in batch (car and tray), traveling and continuous configurations, with integrated material handling and load cooling systems to match production requirements.

Batch
Batch designs typically use electrically driven insulated cars to load and unload furnaces. Options include:
  • Double-ended furnaces with doors at both ends and two cars to reduce turnaround time.
  • Tray systems where charge machines or transfer cars load/unload trays that rest on support piers.
  • Traveling-furnace arrangements that move the furnace between fixed load bases to save floor space.

Airflow Patterns
The patented reversing airflow uses an axial fan wheel that periodically reverses rotation to change horizontal airflow direction through the load. Air temperature is monitored on each side of the charge. A thermal head accelerates initial heating. Reversing airflow improves heating rate and temperature uniformity compared with one-way airflow, reducing energy consumption and improving metallurgical results.

Patented Baffle Design
SECO/WARWICK's adjustable airflow baffles optimize performance for loads smaller than maximum capacity. Key benefits include:
  • Faster heat-up rates due to increased local airflow velocity.
  • Reduced short-circuiting of airflow with smaller loads.
  • Prevention of top-layer overheating.
  • Lower energy requirements from quicker heating.
  • Improved uniformity as airflow is distributed across all load surfaces.

Cooling Systems
Cooling solutions for batch loads include one-way and reversing airflow coolers, air/mist systems, plunge cooling at controlled rates, variable-speed fans and quench chambers. Systems are designed for uniform cooling to minimize distortion and preserve mechanical properties.

Continuous
Continuous log homogenizers support higher throughput with features such as high-velocity slot heating for rapid individual log heating, walking-beam charging, low-friction hearth saddles to improve straightness, discharge quench chambers and accumulator tables. PLC controls adapt movements and cycle parameters to log diameter. SECO/WARWICK supplies complete auxiliary equipment for full-line integration.

Additional Continuous Furnace Advantages
  • Production flexibility via multi-zone vertical airflow to process various alloys and diameters without empty saddles.
  • Automatic handling and PLC-based control reduce human variation and risk during stoppages/restarts.
  • Product traceability: PLC records position, temperature, transformation degree and residence time for each billet, with reporting capabilities.
  • Modular plant delivery to minimize onsite installation time.
  • Energy efficiency through control optimization, counter-flow double-pipe heat exchangers and high-quality insulation.
  • Airflow control and mechanical design tuned to customer performance requirements.
  • Enhanced convective heat transfer from directed high-velocity vertical jets for faster heat-up.
  • Uniform quality control for individual billets and optimized cooling.

Other Features
Options include high-efficiency auto-recuperator burners (up to ~86% output) and biosoluble ecological insulation with selected thickness to reduce wall losses.
