DRILLING is a process for removing chips that, through the removal of material, creates holes that in most cases will constitute housings for bolted or riveted joints. For this purpose, drilling is often followed by boring, tapping or threading. The tool used is a helical drill tip (which will vary depending on the hole and material to be machined) whose surface has two cutting edges, which generate the cut, and two opposite helical grooves, which allow the chip to be evacuated. The right combination of rotation motion and translational motion of the tool, electronically adjustable in Sir Meccanica’s Ws in-line boring and overlay welding machine tools, generates the cutting of the material and the consequent creation of the hole.
