Gradient magnetic field coils generate spatially linearly varying magnetic fields and can be designed in multiple geometries (for example Maxwell coils) to achieve very high magnetic field linearity and power efficiency. They can be implemented as coaxial coil pairs, multi-electromagnet assemblies or gradient pole / magnetic pole arrangements to obtain one-, two- or three-dimensional gradient fields.
