A conductivity meter, as its name indicates, measures a material's conductivity. This value cannot be measured directly, but is calculated from electrical resistivity, current and voltage.
ApplicationsThese devices are primarily used to measure the conductivity of liquids, usually water. This value indicates the quantity of dissolved substances. For practical reasons most are portable. Some instruments can monitor the quality of solids and the proper functioning of water desalination plants. They also can indicate the purity of metals.
TechnologiesThere are two methods for determining the resistivity value necessary to calculate conductivity: the two- and the four-electrode procedures. The first offers faster, easier measurements, though they are less accurate. In contrast, the four-electrode method is not affected by the resistance of the conductor or the connector.
How to chooseDevices with two electrodes are favored for quick, easy measurements. They are also less expensive. However, they are not suitable for quality control operations.
