A hand-held refractometer is an instrument that uses the light refraction of a sample to determine the concentration of one component of a solution.
Hand-held refractometers are used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical and petroleum industries for rapid field testing. They also are commonly used to test the sugar content of wine grapes, fresh fruit, juices, etc. Other uses include testing industrial fluids, such as glycol, battery acid, engine coolant, etc.
There are two types of hand-held refractometer. In optical models, the user places several drops of the sample on the prism, points the instrument toward a natural light source and reads the concentration on a scale suitable for the sample material. Digital models are more rapid and precise. Several drops of sample are placed in the instrument and the result read on a screen.
Choice is determined by type of sample to be tested. Both optical and digital types are manufactured with a particular product in mind (fruit juice, honey, soup, glycol, coolant, etc.).
