TechnologiesA portable refractometer enables field measurements using natural light. It is simple to use, the result being read directly on a visual scale. Digital portable instruments replace the human eye with a photodiode matrix and display the result on a screen. This reduces judgment errors.
Digital bench models use the same principle in laboratory settings and are more precise. The Abbe type, the first modern refractometer, is still used. It has undergone few changes, though the results are now sometimes displayed on a digital screen.
