ApplicationsThese devices are used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical, petroleum and other industries. Manufacturers offer models adapted to many different products. They also are commonly used to test the sugar content of wine grapes, fresh fruit, juices, etc. Other uses include testing industrial fluids, such as glycol, battery acid and engine coolant.
TechnologiesDigital refractometers operate on the same principle as optical types, but are automatic. An internal LED light source illuminates the prism on which several drops of sample have been placed. A matrix of photodiodes reads the refractive shadow and the result appears on a screen. They exist as both bench and portable models, and include a Peltier-effect temperature control feature because refractive index varies with temperature.
