A harmonic filter reduces harmonic currents and voltages produced by machinery and equipment connected to an electrical system.

Applications

Most such filters are used to eliminate harmonics produced by frequency converters. These variable speed controls reintroduce powerful currents into the electrical system, exacerbating wear on other devices. They also reduce transformer efficacy, necessitating the use of oversized units. In general, this problem affects non-linear loads, including switched mode power supplies using power semiconductor switching, lighting and devices producing electric arcs.

Technologies

Passive filters are LC circuits tuned to the undesirable frequencies to be eliminated. These are even multiples of the fundamental line frequency. Several LC circuits can be installed in parallel to eliminate different harmonics. They are used in high-power situations and can correct the power factor by reactive power compensation.

Active filters are used with low-voltage systems. They introduce a compensation current that is the inverse of the undesirable harmonic. Hybrid filters combine the two approaches.

How to choose

Choice will depend on the power of the device producing the distortion. For a frequency converter, a three-phase passive or hybrid filter is the usual choice.
