Heat shrink tubing provides electrical insulation and strain relief for cable splices, wires, terminations and even electrical devices. Heat shrink tubing contracts when heated and forms a uniform insulation covering. It can also be used to bundle wires together for cable fastening and organization.
Heat shrink tubing is used in any electrical application involving bare or exposed wires and terminations. Heat shrink tubing can also be adhesive-lined to environmentally seal and protect a wide variety of electrical systems, including wire splices, terminations, breakouts and connector-to-cable parts.
The operating temperature can change what type of material the heat shrink tubing will be made of. Materials such as polyolefin, fluoropolymer, polyvinylidene fluoride, neoprene, or silicone are all used for different heat shrink applications. Heat shrink tubing can also help to identify or color code wires, cables, terminals and electronic components. Transparent versions are also found for bundling and cable protection where visual inspection is required.
