A helical gearbox uses helical teeth in any number of different configurations (worm gear, bevel gear, etc.), though the term generally indicates cylindrical gearing with helical teeth. It transmits movement continuously because at least two teeth are always engaged.
These mechanisms are used wherever it is necessary to reduce noise or transmit high torque. Thus, they are found in numerous applications, especially transmission gearboxes. However, axial stress may be a problem.
Choice of gear reducer will depend on the speed and torque of both the input and output shafts. These data can be used to calculate the reduction ratio. Another factor is the relative orientation of the input and output shafts: coaxial, parallel, perpendicular, concurrent or not.
