Wedges are an optical window with specific angle between the polished surfaces. The accurancy of the angle between surfaces can achieve 1 sec arc (0.0003°).
Optical wedges are made of optically transparent or filter materials with polished opposite sides, ground edges and chamfers. Optical wedges are similar to optical windows. The difference is that in windows the parallelism is intended but often loosely specified while optical wedges have prescribed departure from parallelism on one or both sides of the window. The AR coatings are often applied on the polished sides of both optical windows and filters to improve their transmission characteristics. Wedges are traditionally used for beam steering. However, nowadays they are often used to control direction of reflected light. They may be used as protective elements or have additional filter or beamsplitter functions.
