A current-carrying twisted pair is superior to parallel conductors, but is of limited effectiveness in reducing electromagnetic radiation. Correspondingly, the twisted pair is limited in avoiding unwanted pickup of external H-fields (D.C. to 100 KHz).
Inter-8® Weave Cable substantially reduces magnetic field pickup and radiation compared with conventional twisted pair cable. Our cable involves four separate conductors braided into interlocking loops and is a patented design of Magnetic Shield Corporation. In application, adjacent conductors 90º apart are connected together, effectively providing a two conductor circuit.
Because the Inter-8® Weave Cable design incorporates parallel conductors, the cable provides double the current carrying capacity of a two wire cable of the same AWG size. In contrast to conventional twisted pair, INTER-8 WEAVE does not kink or untwist when left free.

Inter-8® Weave Cable has applications to many interference problems. Current-carrying conductors generating interference fields can be replaced with INTER-8 WEAVE cable to substantially reduce radiation. In low impedance circuits where external interference results in disturbing signals, Inter-8® Weave Cable will reduce the circuit sensitivity to the external fields. Among typical applications are cable connections to strain gages, thermocouples, photoelectric detectors, audio coils and transformers, piezoelectric transducers and preamplifiers.
SPIRA-SHIELD is flexible conduit that provides high permeability magnetic shielding for sensitive cables and conductors. Constructed of .010" thick CO-NETIC AA Alloy, SPIRA-SHIELD provides greater attenuation than braided sleeving and also furnishes physical protection. Among typical applications are ground support and communication equipment, shipboard control systems, audio-level interconnections, sensitive instrumentation and aerospace apparatus.
Co-Netic® Braided Sleeving, constructed of 36 or 34 AWG CO-NETIC AA high permeability wire, provides superior flexibility compared to foil that is spiral or channel wrapped around cable.
CO-NETIC AA wire in .005" diameter is widely used in magnetic shielding braid applied over cables. All gauges have applications where high permeability, low coercive force and ferromagnetic properties are required. CO-NETIC AA wire is corrosion resistant and has an affinity for solder. Meets MIL-N-14411, Composition I.

Magnetic Shield Corp.'s Lab Kits are highly effective in solving design problems of magnetic interference. (D.C. to 100 kilohertz). By adding MU METAL, CO-NETIC and NETIC layers until desired attenuation is achieved, minimum material requirements can be determined. This results in significant cost savings in the final design.
An important advantage of the "hands-on" shielding approach is that changes in a circuit layout, shield configuration, power levels and component orientation are easily evaluated. The Lab Kit permits magnetic shields to be designed and modified until required performance is obtained. The prototype then serves as a model for production.
As a special offer to introduce you to the exceptional characteristics of our CONETIC and NETIC proprietary alloys, Magnetic Shield has assembled the LK110-IS Lab Kit with Gaussmeter. Containing all the same wide variety of CONECTIC and NETIC alloys as both the LK-120 and LK-110 Lab Kits, the Internet Special Lab Kit also contains a Gaussmeter, This combination of materials and meter is offered for a reduced cost of $199.95.
The EF-401 Gaussmeter is a cost effective, handheld, single-axis magnetic field meter that provides the user with a quick, reliable and easy way to measure electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation levels.
Purchase an LK-110-IS and save 10 per cent off the retail price of the Kit and the Gaussmeter.

MU METAL® offers important electromagnetic field shielding characteristics, including very high magnetic permeability - its ability to absorb magnetic energy. The unique properties of this family of alloys results in the highest possible attenuation, making these shielding alloys the materials of choice for reducing low-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI).
MU METAL® is a trademarked brand of Magnetic Shield Corporation. MU METAL® meets MILSPEC 14411C, composition 1. When the specification or the application calls for a magnetically soft or high permeability material, MU METAL® can frequently be successfully applied.
MU METAL® magnetic shielding prevents magnetic fields from reaching areas where they would cause magnetic interference. Magnetic shielding is used around either the source of interference, to prevent electromagnetic radiation from leaving a device; or more typically, around a sensitive device, to prevent the electro magnetic interference (EMI) from disrupting normal operations.

A Double Shield TBM consists of a rotating cutterhead mounted to the cutterhead support, followed by three shields: a telescopic shield (a smaller diameter inner shield which slides within the larger outer shield), a gripper shield and a tail shield.
In normal operation ("double shield mode"), the gripper shoes are energized, pushing against the tunnel walls to react the boring forces. The main propel cylinders are then extended to push the cutterhead support and cutterhead forward. The rotating cutterhead cuts the rock. The telescopic shield extends as the machine advances keeping everything in the machine under cover and protected from the ground surrounding it.
The gripper shield remains stationary during boring. A segment erector is fixed to the gripper shield allowing pre-cast concrete tunnel lining segments to be erected while the machine is boring. The segments are erected within the safety of the tail shield. It is the Double Shield's ability to erect the tunnel lining simultaneously with boring that allows it to achieve such high performance rates. The completely enclosed shielded design provides the safe working environment.
If the ground becomes too weak to support the gripper shoe pressure, the machine thrust must be reacted another way. In this situation, the machine can be operated in "single shield mode". Auxiliary thrust cylinders are located in the gripper shield. In single shield mode they transfer the thrust from the gripper shield to the tunnel lining. Since the thrust is transferred to the tunnel lining, it is not possible to erect the lining simultaneously with boring. In the single shield mode, tunnel boring and tunnel lining erection are sequential operations.
Regardless of the operating mode, working crews remain protected within the shields. Robbins Double Shield TBMs are capable of safely excavating a wide range of geologic conditions on a project. Our Double Shield TBMs are manufactured to suit your project requirements, in diameters from 1.6 m to 15 m (5 to 50 ft).

Robbins Single Shield TBMs protect workers from broken rock until the tunnel lining can be safely installed. The body of the machine is enclosed in a shield that is marginally smaller than the diameter of the tunnel. The flat, low-profile cutterhead minimizes disturbance of the face as it bores, and prevents large blocks from collapsing and causing excessive boring stresses. The front of the TBM is a rotating cutterhead that matches the diameter of the tunnel. As the cutterhead turns, a ring of hydraulic cylinders provides forward thrust through shoes that push against the tunnel lining. The cutterhead holds disc cutters (ranging from 11" to 20" in diameter) positioned for optimal boring. The transfer of high thrust through the rolling disc cutters creates fractures in the rock, causing chips to break away from the face. Boring and lining installation are performed sequentially. To steer, cylinders orient the articulated cutterhead in the required direction.
Robbins Single Shield TBMs are available in diameters from 1.6 to 15 m (5 to 50 ft). All Single Shields are equipped with high-speed segment erectors for rapid tunnel lining installation. To steer the machine, the cutterhead is articulated. The short shield length enables a small turning radius and minimizes exposure to squeezing ground forces that could potentially trap the machine.

This type of boring machine is used for tunneling in stable to unstable rock for the excavation of traffic tunnels (road and rail), supply tunnels (water, gas and electricity) and other special applications.
The main elements in the construction of the shield tunnel boring machine are the shield which gives the machine its name, a construction like a steel tube in which all other components of the machine are embedded, the cutter head and its drive housing, the advance mechanism and the robot-like device for installation of the tunnel lining, the so-called erector. The tunnel lining, usually consisting of prefabricated concrete sections, is installed with the erector, protected by the rear shield mantle, the so-called tail shield.
