A toggle switch is actuated by moving a lever. Its spring ensures a clear differentiation between the on and the off positions.
These devices are commonly used as on-off switches. Passive versions can indicate whether a door or a car hood is open.
An on-off switch is single-pole with one contact and two positions. In a three-position toggle, one of the positions can provide momentary contact, since the switch will return to the neutral position if released. A reversing switch has three terminals; the middle one can be connected to either of the others. It can have several poles.
A DPDT (double-pole, double-throw) switch with six contacts is a double (two-pole) reversing switch. As a position detector, the switch closes when something pushes against it, in which case it often is equipped with a pressure roller. Toggles generally can be built in or screwed to a support or a piece of machinery. Some have a protective cap, which can be acquired separately. Others are waterproof.
Choice will depend on number of poles and lever positions, current capacity and protective elements.
