Disconnect switches are used as a safety feature in the control of electrical circuits. They provide protection against electrical accidents during servicing or inspection.
ApplicationsDisconnect switches are commonly used in low-voltage switchgear, for starting and stopping motors and for isolating loads during maintenance. They also are found in motor control centers, on switchboards and as on/off switches for industrial equipment and machinery.
TechnologiesDisconnect switches use different insulating technologies depending on their voltage rating. Disconnect switches can also be fused in order to provide proper protection. There are also single-pole and multi-pole disconnect switches depending on the complexity of the circuit.
How to chooseWhen selecting among disconnect switches, be sure to determine your system's insulation voltage, operating voltage and current. An inappropriate choice could cause the switch to malfunction and possibly harm personnel or equipment.
