A transmitter is an electronic device which converts a measurement into a standardized data output signal. The data are transmitted by bus, cable or wireless system to a storage or control center. Sensors with transmission capability may be called transmitters, while a signal conditioner has no sensing unit.
Measurement transmitters centralize measurement data. They are used in automated industrial control and process regulation.
The transmitter output signal is standardized. It might be a four-to-20 mA current loop, a voltage signal of -10 to +10 V or zero to 10 V, a Modbus frame, CANopen, PROFIBUS or a radio frequency signal.
The sensor-transmitter (compact transmitter) combines two functions. If the transmitter comprises only the active part of the device, the sensing element being separate, it is usually called a signal conditioner. A measurement converter is also a transmitter.
All transmitters operate at the point of measurement and relay data to a remote location via a strong, low-noise signal. Often, they also ensure galvanic isolation. Certain models have several universal inputs which must be configured for a particular type of measurement. Some are designed to be mounted on a DIN rail. Certain models include a display.
Choice will depend on whether the input is dedicated or universal, the precision of the measurement-data conversion and the type of transmission.
