Description
The Adhesion Tester model 525 performs pull-off adhesion tests in accordance with ASTM D 4541. It evaluates coatings that can be bonded to a test cylinder using conventional adhesives. The device is entirely mechanical and requires no electrical supply, making it particularly suited for mobile, on-site inspections and harsh field conditions.

Principle of Test
A test cylinder (dolly) is bonded to the coating with a suitable adhesive. Under defined conditions the dolly is pulled off and the tensile stress at failure is recorded. A visual inspection of the detached surface complements the measurement to assess adhesive performance. Results may not be directly comparable with methods that apply shear forces (e.g. cross-cut tests).

Design and Function
The Model 525 comprises a circular housing with three legs and a concentrically positioned compression spring. A cylinder inserted from the top contains dual scales for reading tensile stress in N/mm² and lb/in² and is secured by a threaded spindle with a handwheel or hexagonal nut. The spindle carries the dolly grip and a pin prevents dolly rotation. When the spindle is tensioned the spring transmits force to the dolly; a maximum-reading pointer records peak force after release. Measuring areas correspond to dolly diameters of 20 mm (314 mm²) and 50 mm (1964 mm²).
