Technical description
The Model 404 is used to perform adhesion tests by scratch and cross-cut methods in accordance with international standards and for standardized sample preparation for corrosion tests. The instrument is purely mechanical and designed for handheld operation.

Overview
The VarioCut 404 accepts a range of test tools without requiring individual handles or storage cases for each tool. The retrofittable accessory concept enables flexible expansion with various test tips to cover different test methods and user-specific tools.

Purpose and Application
Coating adhesion to a substrate is both a mechanical property and a factor in corrosion protection: areas of poor adhesion are vulnerable to underfilm corrosion. In paint and coating inspection, series of cutting, scratching and adhesion tests are often combined with defined injurious sample preparations for accelerated corrosion testing (humidity, gas corrosion, salt spray, immersion/alternate immersion, weathering, etc.). Scratch tools create defined linear injuries (vertical, horizontal and crossing) to evaluate coating resistance against subsurface corrosion.

Design
The VarioCut 404 is a handheld tool that meets cross-cut/cutter standards. The ergonomically shaped anodized aluminum grip features an engraved anti-slip grid. A freely rotating central axis in the tool holder/test head provides uniform force; this axis can be locked by turning the black end button to secure individual handling. The basic version is supplied with grip, chuck adapter, flexible steel ruler and plastic case.
