This tabletop manual cross-cut tester applies defined cross-cut patterns to coated test panels using a linear guided carriage and adjustable scribing force, reducing variability from handheld tools and enabling repeatable, standardised adhesion testing.
Functions and designThe unit is a bench-top device with a sliding carriage on a linear guide, driven manually. An adjustable load arm with pivot and a fixable travel stop allow precise, right-angled cuts at 90°. The Multi-Cut adapter accepts cutting bodies with multiple cutting edges for quick replacement after wear.
Principle of the testThe standardised cross-cut test evaluates the adhesion of paints and comparable coatings by cutting a right-angled grid down to the substrate and visually assessing the damage pattern according to standard assessment tables (e.g. based on EN ISO 2409). The result characterises coating adhesion and detachment tendencies that may affect corrosion behaviour.
Test procedure (brief)Set the required scribing force on the load arm and place the Multi-Cut adapter with the selected cutting body on the test panel. Pull the carriage evenly toward the handle to make the first cut. Rotate the panel 180° and perform the second cut with the same force to produce intersecting, right-angled cuts until the substrate is visible. Adjust the scribing force as needed. Visually assess the resulting grid and compare with standard diagrams to assign the corresponding classification.
