Flexible coupling: Oldham coupling

Type UI, Oldham/Universal Couplings

The OEP type UI Oldham/Universal Coupling differs from the UC in one very important way: The fins are longer, and the grooves in the midsection are deeper, so that the fins overlap as seen from the side. The axes of the two fins lie on the same plane, rather than being offset from one another as they are in the type UC. This allows for a smoother, more purely universal sort of flexion, and is much more quiet and efficient at high rpm.

Although the midsection does not serve as a sacrificial mechanical fuse in overload situations, the UI has all the other advantages of the UC coupling, including large radial and angular misalignment accommodation, low reactive forces, zero backlash, electrical insulation, and an easily replaceable and inexpensive wear element.

As of the time of this writing, OEP Couplings' type UI is unique--there are no other manufacturers that offer an Oldham/Universal coupling with one-pc midsection and with coplanar axes of the two cylindrical fins. The closest comparable products are rated for much lower peak torque, have much larger masses and moments of inertia, exhibit some backlash, and are actually more expensive than the type UI.
