An ion chromatograph is used to analyze a mixture by chromatographic separation. The process is referred to as ion-exchange chromatography. The ion exchanger is made from a polymer or a silica gel. This stationary phase is housed in a column.
The mobile phase takes the form of a solution appropriate for the ions to be separated. These are bound by the polarized groups of the stationary phase as a function of their electrical charge. The strength of the attraction varies, explaining why certain ions remain in the column longer than others.
Such devices are often used to analyze drinking water or to detect pollutants in an aquatic ecosystem. The food industry employs them to determine the percentage of salt or sugar in different products.
TechnologiesThere are three types of ion-exchange chromatograph:
- The high-performance ion chromatograph (HPIC) uses a low-capacity ion exchanger as its stationary phase.
- High-performance ion chromatography exclusion (HPICE) employs a sulfide cation exchanger.
- Mobile phase ion chromatography (MPIC) uses a neutral resin as its stationary phase. The mixture is separated by the mobile phase.
