Description

Overview
The BAS-PCS software by Baumüller is an intelligent power management system for ships that controls demand-based power output of units in the drive system. It supports multiple energy generation technologies (generators, batteries, fuel cells) and is compatible with different fuels (methanol, e-fuels, diesel). BAS-PCS manages energy demand across combinations of these sources to optimize fuel consumption and operational efficiency.

Operating principle
The system adjusts the energy supply to match the ship's current demand, for example by regulating the speed of generators so only the required energy is produced. At moderate speeds the vessel can be operated with a single generator; when higher power is needed the software automatically starts an additional generator within seconds. This reduces the need for continuously running redundant engines and enables fuel savings.

Automatic unit management and approvals
BAS-PCS detects situations where maximum power is required (e.g., emergency maneuvers) and makes the power available promptly. The intelligent control makes it possible to obtain approval for running only one unit during normal operation, thereby saving fuel and reducing running hours on redundant systems.

Synchronization to shore network
The power management system handles synchronization with shore power when docked so that shore power can supply the ship and diesel-powered generation can be disconnected. The system architecture allows adding other energy sources such as batteries or fuel cells for shore-power operation and hybrid setups.

Dashboard and monitoring
A control-console monitor displays the current operating status of all drives, keeping the skipper informed about system status and enabling self-regulation to save additional energy and fuel.

References / Case example
VSS Emmerich: a diesel-electric propulsion system demonstrated with BAS-PCS. In that case two diesel generators (294 kW each) supply power for two electric drive motors, the bow thruster and on-board electronics. The BAS-PCS system eliminated the need for continuous redundant operation and achieved fuel savings through demand-compliant operation.

Scope of supply
Baumüller provides BAS-PCS together with drives, project planning, control units and service concepts as an integrated solution throughout the lifecycle of marine propulsion systems.
