OverviewBaumüller provides modular hybrid ship propulsion systems that combine combustion generators and electric motors for newbuilds and retrofits. Solutions target reduced NOx and pollutant emissions, lower fuel consumption and improved operational flexibility for shipyards, system integrators and shipowners.
Ecological and fuel-efficient hybrid operationCombining diesel or methanol generators with electric motors allows generators to operate at steady, optimal efficiency instead of following propulsion power peaks. This enables smaller generator sizing and measurable fuel savings, leading to lower pollutant emissions.
Hybrid modesTwo principal architectures are used to combine electric motors and generators:
- Parallel hybrid: Electric motor and generator are synchronised to deliver full power together.
- Serial hybrid: The electric motor provides propulsion while the combustion engine runs at high efficiency to drive a generator that supplies the electrical system.
Possible generators and energy sources- Methanol (variable-speed)
- LNG
- H2 burner
- Fuel cells
- Solar arrays
- Batteries
- Skysails
- Shore power
Optimal maneuverability and reduced noiseElectric motors deliver immediate torque and precise speed control, improving responsiveness and manoeuvrability. Hybrid systems also reduce the number and load cycles of diesel engines, lowering noise levels and improving ride comfort.
Batteries and energy storageExcess or regenerated energy can be stored in battery systems instead of being lost. Batteries absorb power peaks so generators do not need to cover transient demand and can enable limited fully electric operation (green mode). Batteries are installed in a dedicated battery room.
