The Model 463 Scratch Stylus (Sikkens) is a handheld tool for producing defined scratching damage on coated test panels used in corrosion testing, providing repeatable, adjustable incision depth and guidance for standardized tests.
Purpose and applicationThe scratching stylus method is used to create defined damages (cracks) on coated test panels for corrosion tests, such as Fog Spray Test according to DIN EN ISO 9227 using ERICHSEN corrosion testing apparatus (Models 606 and 608). The lateral undercutting beneath the coating is evaluated to assess corrosion influence and coating adhesion.
Design and functionThe stylus comprises a handle, a supporting knob (side support guide) and a carbide cutting blade. The cutting blade is horizontally adjustable by means of locking/adjustment screws to align with the support knob. The standard cutting blade supplied has rectangular/right-angled edges and a width of 1.0 mm. A 0.5 mm carbide cutting blade is available on request.
Execution of the testTest panels are prepared by producing one or several straight scratch tracks across the sheet width parallel to the narrow edge, penetrating to the substrate. Where required, an St. Andrews Cross (two intersecting scratches) can be applied to evaluate undercutting and adhesion.
