The HANDCUTTER 428 is a handheld scratching tool for producing defined scratches in paint and coating systems. It is supplied with a Clemen test probe and a solid aluminium adapter block for secure holding.
Purpose and applicationIt is used to prepare coated test panels for corrosion tests by applying defined linear scratches (vertical, horizontal or intersecting) so the resistance of the coating against under-rusting can be assessed. Depending on procedure requirements, either a Clemen test tip (included) or test tips according to Van Laar (or a single cross-hatch tip) may be used as scratch tools. These scratches are suitable for accelerated corrosion tests such as condensation water tests, gas corrosion tests, salt spray tests, continuous or alternate immersion tests and accelerated weathering tests.
Scratch performanceScratches are produced at the start of a corrosion test and again at intervals to study progression of underrusting. The user must apply more or less force depending on coating thickness and hardness to reach the substrate and achieve slight metal deformation. A ruler is recommended for straight lines and the recommended drawing speed for a clean scratch is about 10 cm/s (4"). The scratch tool should be led as vertically as possible over the coating when through-scratching.
