Description

Description
The Bend and Impact Tester Model 471 measures flexibility and impact resistance of light‑gauge coated sheet metal and tube stock in a single operation. The test reproduces forming operations such as punching, beading and crimping to assess coating integrity after sudden bending and impact.

Design and function
The instrument comprises two vertical guide tubes that guide an impact hammer (2300 ± 100 g) with a drop height of 650 ± 5 mm, a specially shaped anvil for positioning the pre‑bent test panel, and a 5 mm diameter mandrel mounted on the base for bending the coated panel prior to impact.

Test principle
A pre‑bent coated panel with a cylindrical fold is subjected to a defined impact force that deforms the fold into a conical shape. The test determines the bending radius at which the coating first shows failure under combined bending and impact stress.

Test procedure
The coated panel (50 × 140 mm) is bent 180° over the 5 mm mandrel with the coating outside. The impact hammer is suspended between the upper holding pins, the pre‑bent panel is placed on the anvil with one edge against the stop plate, and then the hammer is released to apply the impact.

Evaluation
Prepare the corrosion indicator by dissolving:
  • 100 g copper sulfate (CuSO4 · 5 H2O)
  • 50 g citric acid
  • 0.5 ml concentrated sulfuric acid (spec. gravity 1.84)
in 1 litre of distilled water. Immerse the test panel in this solution for 5 minutes, rinse under running water and inspect. Coating failures appear as corrosion lines or spots.

Test result
Measure the length in mm of the corrosion line(s) and corrosion points from the buckling point (maximum fold). Shorter corrosion lengths indicate better formative ability of the coating.
