Product overviewFLS mercury retorts remove mercury from mercury-bearing materials by controlled heating (vaporisation) and condensation. The process reduces health and environmental risks and enables recovery of liquid mercury for safe removal or recycling.
Key benefits- Low emissions — Engineered to comply with strict international mercury emission limits; optional particle filters available to further reduce emissions.
- Versatile — Handles feedstocks with a wide range of mercury concentrations. Available in barrel-style (suitable for electrowinning sludge) and cabinet-style (for Merrill‑Crowe circuits).
- Complete system supply — Supplied pre-assembled and skid-mounted including condenser train, mercury trap, dual coalescing/HEPA filters and sulphur‑impregnated carbon bed for simplified shipping and start-up.
Retort types- Barrel retort — Fully enclosed stainless‑steel barrel oven with 253MA internal oven components for high‑temperature corrosion resistance. External‑fuel or internal‑heating options and integral chilling system. Suitable for high‑moisture, variable materials and heavy‑duty, higher‑capacity applications.
- Cabinet retort — Compact, skid‑mounted design with 253MA internals and integrated chiller. Excellent vapour containment; designed for integration with Merrill‑Crowe circuits.

How it worksMaterial containing mercury is heated in the retort oven until mercury vaporises (boiling point ≈ 356.7 °C). The vapour passes through a cooling system where it condenses to liquid mercury and is collected for controlled removal or recovery.
Why mercury is dangerousMercury is toxic: exposure can damage the nervous, digestive and immune systems and impair internal organs.
