IstoTech is a range of automated systems for intensive, secure archiving of histological samples. With IstoTech automatic archives it is possible to organize, store, identify and trace slides and paraffin tissue blocks, reducing clinical risk from loss or mismanagement of samples and optimizing available space.

Operation and operating modes
Systems operate on a “materials-to-person” principle: search and request for retrieval or deposit are performed via an on-board PC console or mobile devices with the management software. An automated handling system retrieves the tray containing the sample(s) and delivers it to an ergonomic access bay where authorized personnel perform retrieval or deposit.

• Trays specifically designed for storage of slides and inclusions (metal or plastic drawers, single or double lane, front tab for handling).
• Barcode and/or QR Code applicable to tray and tab for dual verification of retrieval/deposit.
• Intelligent robotic retrieval with automated tray handling.

IRIDE – interactive multimedia system
IRIDE is the integrated interactive control system in the machine that supports and simplifies picking operations. Main functionalities include:

• Light Picking Guide: pick guidance using colored light beams to identify the sector containing the slides or inclusions to be retrieved.
• Head-up Digital Dashboard: digital dashboard projecting relevant retrieval information into the operator’s field of view.
• Active Control: buttons on the edge of the bay to interact with projected information without returning to the PC station.
• Adaptive Interior Lightning: integrated illumination and light signaling for alarm conditions and machine status.

Control software
bbTraccia® (histological archiving software developed by Katalog) manages sample traceability throughout the storage lifecycle. Available as web server or Cloud version and integrable with common Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), block scanners and optical readers.

How it works (operational sequence)

• Operator login: via badge reading (RFID/magnetic optional) or username/password entry on the on-board touch console.
• Search and selection of the sample using a barcode reader or software interface.
• Automatic retrieval: tray arrival at the bay via the automated handling system.
• Retrieval or deposit operation performed by the operator, supported by IRIDE.
• Confirmation of the operation and registration in the system.
