Description

Summary
Polypropylene is the industry-standard waterproof material for packaging labels: resistant to water, humidity and splashes. Flexible and lightweight, it conforms to curved surfaces (bottles, jars, containers) and is used when paper is insufficient and polyester would be oversized for the application. Compatible with thermal transfer and available in versions for ribbon or direct thermal printing.

Main properties
Temperature: -20°C to +80°C
Humidity resistance: High
Printing: mixed/resin ribbon (also direct thermal versions available)
Finishes: Matte / Gloss / Transparent

Typical applications
  • Labeling packaging and containers exposed to moisture
  • Identification in logistics and outdoor warehouse use
  • Applications on plastic containers and curved surfaces
  • Commercial labeling with transparent or “no-label” look

Compatible adhesives
Used with permanent acrylic, removable acrylic, rubber (hot‑melt) and clear adhesive for transparent PP; choose adhesive according to substrate and environment (e.g. cryo-stable adhesive for freezing conditions).

Available variants
  • White matte PP: ideal for printing barcodes and technical text without reflections; typical in logistics and traceability
  • White gloss PP: higher visual contrast and fine detail; common on product and consumer-pack labels
  • Transparent PP: “no-label” effect; visually integrates the label with the container
  • Direct thermal PP: prints without ribbon and offers improved water resistance compared to standard thermal paper; common in logistics and shipping in humid conditions

Sectors and typical uses
  • Food & beverage: labels for cold rooms, containers with condensation and curved packaging
  • Logistics & distribution: shipping and pallet labels in humid or outdoor conditions
  • Fast-moving consumer goods & packaging: transparent PP for no-label look on bottles and jars
  • Cleaning, hygiene & personal care: resistance to frequent contact with soaps, detergents and handling

Limitations and when not to choose polypropylene
  • Avoid when continuous service temperature exceeds +80°C (use polyester)
  • Not recommended for prolonged contact with aggressive solvents, concentrated acids or strong industrial oils
  • Not the best option for long-term outdoor UV exposure when extended legibility is required
  • Processes involving intense heat (autoclave, oven curing) require alternative materials

Printing and finishing recommendations
  • For thermal transfer: use mixed or resin ribbons according to durability requirements
  • For labels that should appear invisible: use transparent PP with clear adhesive
  • For porous substrates or recycled cardboard: consider rubber (hot‑melt) for high initial tack

Characteristics / technical specifications
  • Service temperature range: -20 °C to +80 °C
  • Humidity resistance: High
  • Printing compatibility: mixed/resin ribbon; direct thermal PP versions available
  • Finishes: White matte, White gloss, Transparent, Direct thermal
  • Recommended adhesives: Permanent acrylic, Removable acrylic, Rubber (hot‑melt), Clear adhesive (for no-label effect); cryo-stable adhesive for frozen environments
  • Typical applications: cold-chain labeling, outdoor logistics, curved plastic containers, commercial labeling
  • Higher thermal/chemical resistance alternative: Polyester
