Description

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is the polymer of tetrafluoroethylene. It is commonly known by its commercial name, Teflon, where the polymer is combined with other stabilizing and flow-enhancing components to improve its applicability. PTFE is a smooth-to-the-touch plastic resistant to high temperatures (up to 200 °C and beyond), widely used in industry to coat surfaces exposed to high temperatures, requiring “non-stick” properties and good chemical inertness. Reinforcement with glass fibers improves its wear resistance and, to a lesser extent, its resistance to deformation under permanent load. However, glass has low resistance to alkalis and can be attacked by hydrofluoric acid. It slightly increases the coefficient of friction. The filler content ranges from 5% to 40%. Applications: Mechanical: Its low coefficient of friction makes it suitable for very low-load applications. Chemical: Used for components in the petrochemical and chemical industries due to its high chemical inertness. Food industry: The material is compatible with food contact and can therefore be used in this sector. Electrical: Excellent dielectric properties, self-extinguishing capability, and weather resistance make it increasingly popular in this field. PTFE + 25% Glass exhibits the following properties: Excellent resistance to both low and high temperatures, up to 260°C. Outstanding resistance to weathering and UV radiation. Good thermal insulation properties. Low coefficient of friction. Improved mechanical properties compared to pure PTFE. Excellent chemical resistance to almost all aggressive substances, except strong alkalis.
