The Oxygen Index (OI) gives us an accurate way of measuring the minimum concentration of oxygen percentage, that will just support the material flaming under a constant airflow and ambient temperature. The oxygen index test is the most economical, repeatable, and precise test to evaluate the reaction to fire behavior of the material, widely used for plastic, textile, and building material industries. How to conduct an oxygen index test? A small specimen is supported vertically in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen flowing upwards through a transparent glass chimney. The top of the specimen is ignited, and observe the subsequent burning behavior, such as burning length and burning time, to determine whether the specimen is ignited or not. By testing a series of specimens in different oxygen concentrations, the limited oxygen index is determined by the particular calculation.
